Generate 100's of Leads for Your MLM Biz

Want to generate a bunch of new prospects for your network marketing business? Here is a time and field tested method.
Find a big tradeshow in your area and attend it. Walk from booth to booth and say: "So, tell me about what you're offering." Then listen. Listen particularly for whether this is the type of person you would like to work with, in your business. If they are good, compliment them and ask how long they've been with the company. Ask what they like and dislike about working for the company. Get a business card with their name and contact info and move on.
Walk a few feet away from the booth and jot some notes about the person on the back of the card. Particularly make note of the things you liked about them. Continue from booth to booth gathering cards.
At a big tradeshow, you could walk away with 100 or more good prospects. Next, you want to wait a couple weeks (this gives them time to call all the leads from the show and be totally disappointed) and call. Say something like: "Mike, this is Rod Nichols. I'm sure you don't remember me, but we met at the XYZ tradeshow on the 5th. How did things turn out for you? The reason I'm calling is that I was very impressed with you (mention the things you wrote on the back of the business card). I am a recruiter for a rapidly growing company and we are always looking for quality people like yourself. Do you at all keep your options open in terms of making money outside of what you do now?" If they say yes, "Great, let's set up a time to meet in the coming week to discuss my proposal. Would Tuesday at 10 am work or would Thursday at 1 be better? If they ask what is it, just give them the company name and ask if they've heard of the company. If yes, ask what they've heard. If no, just say: "You really need to take a look at this business, so Tuesday at 10 or Thursday at 1?
Once you have an appointment, get off the phone. If they ask more questions, tell them that is the purpose for meeting. Make sure you have their email address, so you can send a confirming email after the call and ask if they can receive text messages on their phone, so you can send a confirming text message the day of your appointment. One good tradeshow a month and you will have more than enough good prospects to build a massive MLM business.

Visalus Terminates 80 Promoters

Visalus Sciences, the Challenge Company, has terminated at least 80 of their Promoters (those who are building a Visalus business), reportedly a number of them were top leaders. As a long-time leader in the network marketing industry, I wondered why a popular company like Visalus would terminate so many people in one shot. My research unveiled that their policies and procedures clearly say that a Promoter may not be involved in promoting another MLM business (which is interpreted by the company as any plan that pays more than a single level). Those terminated were working programs like My Lead System Pro and Empower Network, which are marketed as MLM lead systems, but also have a compensation plan. Some of those terminated were top income earners in both Visalus and in the other companies.
This has been an ongoing struggle in the industry. There are some companies, like Visalus, that are very strict with their policy about working other businesses that are similar to MLM. In my opinion, those marketing network marketing/MLM businesses are independent contractors and as long as they are not cross recruiting (trying to get people from their primary company - i.e. Visalus, in this case) into another MLM company, they should not be penalized. I certainly understand why a network marketing company like Visalus would not want their leaders cross promoting, but have a hard time understanding why they would not allow their Promoters to be involved in programs that do generate leads and help people build that primary business. My opinion is that it's too heavy handed and will probably result in some lawsuits.
Personally, I think the best network marketing companies are those who have founders so confident in their business that they aren't heavy handed with those peple who are building their business. Top leaders, in any network marketing business, are entrepreneurial at heart and the more freedom they are given (within reason), the better they will produce.
The lesson to be learned here is that if you are with a network marketing company, read your policies and procedures before you involve yourself in any of the "lead generation" or "funded business proposal" systems. If you are with a "heavy handed" company, you'll have to decide whether to continue with that company or find one of the more confident companies that hold those who are building a business more loosely. Personally, that's my choice.

Attract Leaders

Do you want to attract leaders into your network marketing business? Become one. Leaders are attracted to other leaders. Here are some quick tips on becoming a leader:

1. Improve your skills.Leaders are proficient in 50 primary skills. To learn more about those and take a profile that will assess your skill levels, go to and order a PE Profile. Once you know the areas where you are not proficient, begin working on those every week and slowly you will become the leader everyone wants to follow.

2. Create your brand. Use the social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Linked in, MySpace, and a personal blog to create your leader brand. You do this by posting professional information that will be useful to people who eventually might be interested in your business. The more you present good information, the more you become the go-to person and the more attractive you are. Promote yourself and as you provide value to others, they will begin to promote you.

3. Be positive. Who wants to be around negative people? Only other negative people, because misery likes company. Become a glass full kind of person. Watch your thoughts and words and make sure that they are those of a leader.

4. Go the extra mile. If you have a job, become known as the person who works excellently. The person who goes beyond what is asked of him or her. In your network marketing business, under promise and over perform. Never use hype to manipulate people into your business. Instead, become a solution to their issues. Uncover their pain and passion and then offer your business as a solution. Your reputation will spread quickly, resulting in either a promotion at work or growth in your business.

5. Achieve success. Do the work necessary to achieve rank advancements in your company, earn the free trips, the luxury car, etc. People are watching and they are attracted to success.

Leaders are attractive. People want to be around and follow them. Do these four things and you will quickly become that kind of leader and attract other leaders to your business!

Working Multiple MLM's

Through my 33 years of network marketing, I've had many people approach me with the idea of working multiple mlm's. Some were asking if I thought it was possible and some were just trying to get me in their deal, even though I had told them I was committed to mine. I've heard all the so called rationale for working multiple companies - multiple income streams, spreading the risk (not putting all your eggs in one basic), diversifying your offerings, using one to promote another, etc and while that all sounds good, the reality is that I have never been able to work simultaneous mlm's and I have not met anyone else who has successfully done so either. Now, I have worked a company until it was solid, retired and then built another, so that I had multiple streams of residual income, but I was not building both at the same time.

Here are my concerns about trying to build two or more businesses at that same time:

1. Loyalty - when you enroll with a company and commit to an upline, you are saying that you are going to devote your time and energy to building a business with that company. If you have a good upline, they are going to commit to your training and on-going support. If you're working multiple businesses, then you are splitting your loyalty and that doesn't seem quit fair to either the company or the upline.

2. Time - we all only have 24 hours in a day and most of that is taken by work, eating, and sleeping. For most people, if they can squeak out 10 hours a week for a business, they're doing well. So, if they are then splitting that time between 2 or more businesses, there just isn't enough time to build a successful business.

3. Confusion - when you are working more than one network marketing business, how do you decide who to put in which company. What if you find a really tremendous prospect, which company do you put him/her in? This causes confusion and confusion causes procrastination and paralysis. Plus, imagine how it looks to your upline, downline and prospects. You begin to look like the street peddler who has a coat full of watches and other nicnaks.

As you can tell, I'm not real high on working multiple mlm's, however there is one exception. There are a few companies out there that offer products that will help you build your primary mlm business. Some examples would be Magnetic Sponsoring, which offers a great funded business proposal, enabling you to prospect for your primary business and get paid to do it.

Another one is Send Out Cards, which I've used for some time now to send cards to my downline members who sponsor their first person, achieve new ranks, or just need a little encouragement. I also send cards to prospects. It's a very convenient  and less expensive way to send a personal message to someone through the mail. Plus it enables me to remember people's birthdays and anniversaries and send out a card, which is always a great relationships builder.

These are either affiliate or mlm programs, but I don't work any of them as a primary business. Now, at times, people will see the systems and enroll themselves, which does create another stream of income, but my loyalty, focus, and energy is all pointed to my primary business.

Perhaps you are better than me and can successfully build multiple, simultaneous mlm's, but my encouragement is not to try. It's difficult enough to build one big mlm business, much less two or more. I highly recommend that you find the very best company you can find and then focus all your attention there for at least 5 years. Build it to the point where you have several layers of committed leadership and a nice weekly or monthly residual income. Then, if you want, you can pursue another venture and build another stream of income.

What's Hot in Network Marketing?

What's Hot in Network Marketing?

In my over three decades of network marketing, I've found that if you want to enjoy big success, you have to study the industry for what's hot and what will stay hot. If you select a company with a product that is hot right now, but won't be in 5 years, then you won't be able to build a long-term residual income. For example there was a company back in the 90's that marketed discounted long distance. They did very well for awhile, but the cost of long-distance continued to drop to a point where there wasn't enough margin. Incomes dropped, leaders left, and eventually the company folded, destroying the dreams of many.

In your industry analysis, it's important to look historically. In other words, what has always worked. Take a look at the top companies - what do they market? What did they market in the beginning. An example would be Amway. The started out marketing only nutritional supplements and today, 53 years later, their top sellers are still supplements. Amway is now a 9.2 billion dollar company. Success leaves clues.

The hottest product in network marketing has always been nutritional supplements and it will continue to be, particularly due to the terrible American (and many other parts of the world) diet. Supplements will always be in high demand.

I can hear you saying, "but what about cellular, it's hot?" Yes, it's hot now, but you have to look at the cellular industry historically in order to see a trend that would keep me and any other top industry leader away from a company that offered cellular. In the 1980's cell phones were selling for $2,000 to $4,500 and cell service was about $1 per minute. Today, you get the phone for free or for well under $500, if you sign a 2 year agreement. Most people will do that. So, now we have a couple issues. First, people are locked into cell contracts and those cell companies will do whatever they need to keep their customers. Second, the cellular trend is toward cheaper phones and service, so unless it's one of the major service suppliers - AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, or Sprint - that is actually forming the network marketing company, just as with my long-distance example, there won't be enough margin to fund a network marketing compensation plan.

The same is true for any service company out there. The way that they try to make it work is through coding bonuses. These are bonuses/commissions paid for training. In other words, each new represetative is required or encouraged to purchase a training package, typically for $500 or more. A good chunk of that goes to the sponsor, which then enables people to develop full-time incomes. The problem is that as soon as you stop recruiting, those bonuses stop, so it's difficult to build a long-term walkaway residual income.

So what's really hot in network marketing? Weight loss. Herbalife made it big on weight loss and continues to grow because of it. Many new companies have jumped on the bandwagon and are experiencing rapid growth. So, the question is, will weight loss continue to be a hot market? Taking a look at our fast paced, fast food lifestyle, I don't see that changing anytime in the near future, so yes, weight loss will remain hot. Plus, what a great opportunity to transform a person's life.

The key is to find a company that markets a complete system - products that help stimulate the metabolism and an eating program that is realistic enough for someone to do for the rest of their life. If it's a shake in the morning, a shake at noon, and a sensible meal at night, it's not sustainable long-term. If it's pre-packaged foods, it's not sustainable long-term. If people are hungry or feeling deprived on the program, it's not sustainable long-term. Find the system that people can do for the rest of their life, and you've got a goldmine!

Zeek Rewards

As you may or may not have heard, Zeek Rewards has come under the scrutiny of the Security and Exchange Commission and the Secret Service. Here is an article detailing the situation: Also, here is an article with a response from MLM Attorney, Kevin Thompson regarding the Zeek Rewards situation:

I'm always sorry to see people get hurt and it's situations like this that give network marketing a bad reputation. I was approached many times by people in Zeek Rewards and I told them all the same thing - it won't last, don't waste your time and money. Why did I say that, because I've seen programs similar to this float into our great industry time and time again and they all fail. They fail because there isn't a legitimate product that people would pay for, if they weren't involved in the business. When you are approached to participate in a business venture, here is what you need to check out BEFORE you join:

1. Does the company have a product that people would buy if they weren't involved in the business or the money-making venture?

2. Are commissions paid on the purchase of said products or on training packages/seminars/webinars that would have no value to anyone who wasn't trying to make money with the company?

3. Is the company saying that it is a business and that you will have to invest time, money, and effort to build it?

If the answer is NO to any of these, RUN as fast as you can and recommend that the person who introduced it to you RUN as fast as they can. It will either fail or the government regulators will shut it down. Guartanteed!

There are over 1,000 legitimate, solid network marketing companies out there. Stop wasting your time and money and damaging your reputation by participating in these money making scams. Find a good company that has the following:

1. A legitimate, highly consumable product that impacts peoples lives (nutritionals are #1, skin care #2, household cleaning products #3).

2. Under $50 to get started with the company and participate in the business/money making. There may be an additional product purchase recommended, but if it's required, run away.

3. Compensation is based SOLELY on product purchases by customers and distributors in your network. If the company is paying you to recruit people, or for people buying training packages, run away!

4. A solid pathway to success and people who have already done it. Combined with training and on going support to help you down the path.

5. A solid management team with successful experience in building both large traditional businesses and building large network marketing networks (I like to see corporate people who have been successful distributors).

Keep searching until you find a company that meets these 5 criteria and then check to make sure that the company values match your's, that you can get passionate about the product, and that you have a solid upline team that will train and support you long-term. When you find this, jump on board, put the blinders on and build like crazy!!! If you stay there long enough, you will meet and exceed your financial goals.

Coach Your Leaders

I was introduced to network marketing/multi-level marketing in 1979 and for the first 10 years I was a miserable failure. I did just about everything that a person could do wrong and very few of the right things. One of the reasons for this was that I didn't receive any coaching. I was always sponsored by a friend or someone who didn't know any more about succeeding in network marketing than I did. I didn't achieve any success until I started receiving regular coaching from successful upline mentors.

Now that I am a successful upline mentor, I intentionally reach out to my leaders (even those I haven't personally sponsored) and offer regular coaching calls or meetings. I don't want them to have to suffer for 10 years, like I did. Instead, I want them to see a high level of success within the first 2 years and the only way that can happen is if they have someone to guide them through the MLM minefields that deter most people.

During these weekly or every other week coaching calls, I help them uncover their compelling why, set goals, create a plan to reach those goals, and a weekly schedule that will keep them committed to their business. In the following calls, I hold them accountable to the activities they have scheduled and to the achievement of their goals within the set time lines. We also talk about their contacts during the preceding week and I coach them on how to handle situations, objections, questions, or anything else that becomes a barrier to the person enrolling. I strive to help my downline members become better with each new contact.

I also use these coaching times to build relationship. I want to know about the rest of their life - where they work, what they do, family, friends, hobbies, successes and struggles. I keep notes on my leaders, so I can remember to ask them about things that are going on. I care and want them to know that they are not just a cog in the machine or a number in the system. They are important to me and I want them to not only be successful in their business, but also in their lives. Sometimes I even do some coaching on marriages, relationships, health issues, mental struggles, and more. I'm looking to build whole, healthy people, not just successful downline members.

Eventually, these leaders, or up and coming leaders, will outgrow me and go on to coach their own leaders. The cycle repeats down throughout the team, creating a network of loyal, highly trained members who are enjoying success in their businesses and life. This is how you build a strong organization and life-long residual income.

I started this coaching system back in 1995 and built an organization into the thousands that is still intact today, even though I retired from that business in 2001. Consequently, I still earn a significant annual residual income from that business. I am now replicating that system with a new company and in just 2 years have already built a solid network of over 3,000 members and a six figure income and I'm nothing special. I'm basically introverted and don't sponsor a lot of people. I'm just good at building leaders and now that you have my strategy, you can too!

Rod Nichols has been involved in the network marketing/MLM industry since 1979 as a company founder/owner, consultant, trainer, coach, mentor, distributor, and author. He has been a top leader and built large networks with three MLM businesses and earns a full-time residual income from two of those and is a top income earner in his current company.
